Modern Authentication replaces Basic Authentication in Microsoft 365
Microsoft will phase out Basic Authentication in Microsoft 365 in September 2025. This legacy login method will be replaced by Modern Authentication, which provides stronger protection against intrusion, phishing and account hijacking. To avoid disruption to your systems, it is important to prepare well in advance.

What is Basic Authentication and why is it disappearing?
Basic Authentication is an older login method where usernames and passwords are sent in plain text. Which makes it easier for unauthorized people to hijack accounts. This method is now being replaced by Modern Authentication (OAuth 2.0), which offers significantly better security through multi-factor authentication (MFA) and tokens.
What does the change mean for you?
Applications and services that still use Basic Authentication to connect to Microsoft 365 services (such as Exchange Online, SharePoint, or Teams) will stop working after the rollout.
It can have an impact:
- Older email clients that do not support Modern Authentication (e.g. older versions of Outlook, some third-party apps or mobile apps)
- Printers or multifunction devices (MFPs) sending e-mail via SMTP with Basic Authentication
- Own or third-party applications connected to Microsoft 365 with legacy authentication methods
What do you need to do now?
To avoid disruptions and safety risks, we recommend that you
- Inventory your systems, applications and devices to identify who is using Basic Authentication.
- Upgrade or reconfigure systems to use Modern Authentication. For MFPs, this may mean switching to SMTP Relay or using a secure gateway solution.
- Please contact us if you are unsure whether you are affected or if you need help with the transition.
We are happy to help you identify which systems are affected and find the right solutions for your business. All to ensure a smooth transition and avoid any disruption to your systems.
