Take the next step with Microsoft Copilot agents
Many companies have become familiar with Microsoft Copilot and use it daily in tools like Outlook, Word and Teams. But once the initial curiosity wears off, a natural question arises: how do we take the next step? How do we move from testing Copilot in everyday tasks, to making it a strategic part of the way we work?
In this article, we take a closer look at how you as an organization can develop the use of Copilot. With a particular focus on Copilot chat, security and perhaps the most exciting feature yet: Copilot agents.
Try Copilot too, you won't regret it!
From curiosity to strategy
As Copilot moves from being an exciting tool to becoming an integral part of the working day, the organization also needs to change its way of thinking. The goal is no longer just to "test" Copilot, but to find the right use cases, create structure and measure actual benefits.
Questions you can ask in this phase are:
- Which workflows in our business are suitable for automation or offloading with Copilot?
- How can we build internal skills so that more people can embrace technology?
- What do we need to do technically and organizationally to scale up?
What are Copilot agents and why are they the next big thing?
Copilot agents are intelligent, role-based assistants that you build in Microsoft Copilot Studio and publish directly to Copilot Chat or Microsoft Teams. They live in your existing Microsoft 365 environment, use your internal data sources, and are ready to start helping right away. The best part?
There's no code required. You just describe in natural language what the agent should be able to do. For example, what questions it should be able to answer and what documents it should pull facts from. Then you test and publish. Everything is done in a visual, user-friendly interface.
You don't have to build complex integrations. The agent becomes a natural extension of your existing tools and a cost-effective way to start using AI for real.
Example of operational Copilot agents:
HR agent: Employees can ask questions such as "How do I apply for parental leave?", "Where are the teleworking guidelines?" or "How do I report absences?". The agent searches for answers in SharePoint, Teams or the intranet and responds directly in the chat.
Finance Support Agent: Helps colleagues find reporting templates, expense policies or how to book an external consultant. Without the finance department having to answer the same questions every day.
Project Agent: Provides quick access to templates, schedules, Planner tasks and important documentation related to projects, directly in Copilot Chat.
Unlike many other AI solutions where you need to build a bot from scratch, Copilot agents work directly within the ecosystem you already use and pay for. No new system, no expensive third-party licenses. Just smart functionality that strengthens your internal ways of working.
Safe and free chat in your own environment
A common concern when it comes to AI and chat functions is data security, especially the risk of company data leaving its own environment. With many external AI tools, information is sent outside the company's control, which can violate both internal privacy policies and compliance requirements.
This is where Microsoft Copilot really stands out. Microsoft 365 Copilot chat is free for licensed users and runs entirely within your own Microsoft tenant. This means that your company data stays in your environment and is subject to the same security, privacy and compliance rules as any other Microsoft 365 service. Nothing you type in Copilot is used to train the underlying AI. So you can safely use Copilot chat to brainstorm, analyze, or process sensitive information. With full control and without compromising security.
Safety first, even with agents
When you start using Copilot on a larger scale, or assign licenses to more users, it becomes even more important to have a well thought-out environment and the right security settings. We often see that organizations underestimate the importance of having the tenant configured correctly. To be able to utilize all features and avoid security risks such as accidental sharing of sensitive data. It requires that user permissions, data sources and policies are set correctly. This can range from financial information to personal data that could otherwise be visible to the wrong person.
Copilot's security is good, but it relies on the rest of the organization's data structure also being in order.
How we at Upheads help
We know that every organization is different, but the need for guidance is often the same. That's why we've developed packaged solutions for companies looking to take the next step with Copilot. This can include workshops to identify areas of use, technical configuration of agents, or training that makes it easier for the team to dare to use AI in everyday life.
