IT Strategy – How to Set the Right Priorities and Get More Out of Your IT
AI, cybersecurity, Microsoft 365, and automation. There are many areas where companies can invest in IT. But what should you prioritize, in what order, and why? A good IT strategy doesn’t start with the technology. It starts with the company’s goals.
Today, IT is a vital part of how companies grow. Despite this, IT and business operations are still often planned separately. The result can be a long list of things that should be done, without a clear connection to what the company actually wants to achieve.
So how do you create an IT plan that helps the company move forward?
Start with the company's goals—not the technology
Before you decide which IT solutions you need, it's important to think about what you want to achieve.
If the company is to grow, it may place new demands on how you welcome new employees, manage access rights, and collaborate.
If you want to reduce administrative work, automation and AI can be part of the solution.
If you plan to expand into new markets, new requirements may arise regarding IT security, work processes, and how your systems work together.
Once you know where the company is headed, it becomes easier to determine which IT initiatives are actually needed.
From a Wish List to a Clear IT Plan
It's easy for the IT plan to turn into a list of things that should be done:
We should get started with Copilot.
We need to review our IT security.
We should have better organization in Teams and SharePoint.
We need to modernize our IT environment.
All of these can be important initiatives. But not everything needs to be done at the same time. A clear IT plan will help you decide what’s most important, what can wait, and in what order different tasks need to be completed.
Five Questions to Help You Get Started
- What does the company want to achieve? Start with your goals—for example, growth, better customer service, or less administrative work.
- How are things going today? What's working well, and what's preventing you from reaching your goals?
- What needs to be improved? What changes would make the biggest difference for employees or the company?
- What should you prioritize? Which initiatives are most important, and is there anything you need to do first?
- How do you track the results? What do you hope this initiative will achieve, and how can you tell if you've succeeded?
By using these questions as a starting point, you'll end up with a plan that not only describes what you should do, but also why.
The Right Things in the Right Order
AI is a good example of why order matters.
It’s easy to start thinking about which AI solution the company should use. But if the data is unstructured, access permissions aren’t under control, or there’s a lack of common work practices, there may be more important issues to address first.
That doesn't mean AI is the wrong investment. On the contrary, AI can create significant opportunities. But by first assessing the conditions, you increase your chances of getting more out of your investment.
So it's not just about what you should do, but also what you need to do first.
A new solution is not the same as a better result
Just because a new IT solution is in place doesn't automatically mean that the investment has created value.
The most important question actually comes afterward:
Did the work become easier or better?
If you implement automation to reduce administrative work, do employees actually save time?
If you invest in better collaboration tools, will it be easier to find information and work together?
If you improve your IT security, what risks have you reduced?
By deciding right from the start what you want to improve, it also becomes easier to track the results. That way, you can see which initiatives are making a difference and what might need to be adjusted.
An IT plan needs to be kept up to date
The company is changing, new needs are arising, and technology is evolving. That is why the IT plan also needs to be reviewed regularly.
Ask yourselves a few simple questions: What has changed since last time? Are our priorities still the right ones? And what do we need to do next?
This way, you can plan your IT initiatives well in advance, rather than just solving problems as they arise.
A good IT strategy doesn't have to be complicated. The important thing is to have a clear plan for what you want to achieve, which initiatives to prioritize, and how you'll track the results.
The IT strategy is intended to help the company move forward
A good IT strategy isn't about having the most technology or always being the first to adopt the latest innovations. It's about using technology where it actually makes a difference. When your IT plan is based on your company's goals, it becomes easier to prioritize investments, track results, and get more out of the technology you already have.
So what does your IT plan look like today? Do you have a clear picture of what you need to prioritize in order to achieve the company's goals?
