Data warehouse - how to achieve a modern service architecture in the cloud

The digital transformation that companies are undergoing today brings many benefits but also a number of challenges. On the one hand, it creates completely new opportunities to conduct business and create increased value for your customers, but on the other hand, it also places a number of demands on renewed processes and infrastructures in your digital environment. This means that many companies are struggling to keep up with the speed of digital development. The solution is more and more often that companies choose to move from an application-oriented to a more consolidated and service-focused IT architecture.

Many separate data sets create problems

The core business processes of many companies have traditionally been built around a number of standalone applications in an on-premise environment. Each of these applications operate in their respective silos, with their own sets of data. Without coordination, the applications are developed independently of each other and without regard to their impact on other parts of the business process.

Using multiple data sets is problematic in several ways. Not only does it waste storage space, but in data analysis it gives rise to inconsistent KPIs due to the individual differences between data sets. In addition, the user experience is negatively affected because the process does not run end-to-end. Instead of one view, you have to work in several different applications - each with its own interface - to complete a task. Often, you will also have to manually perform certain steps in the gap between applications.

Consolidate your data in a common data warehouse

Cloud services create new opportunities to streamline business processes with a focus on a seamless user experience that replaces the app-centric ways of working in legacy on-premise systems. In a shared data warehouse, you can consolidate standalone applications into a common architecture that spans multiple services for an improved, unified user experience. It is also possible to automate many of the steps that previously required manual intervention.

Other benefits of a common data warehouse are:

  • Compliance: With a data warehouse, you achieve a new level of control over how data is accessed and distributed. The move from a silo-based to a common aggregation of data from multiple sources, ensures that all processes have access to the highest quality data and that only authorized people have access to it.
  • Better insights: When KPIs are based on shared data, the accuracy of analysis is improved, providing insights that help the business make more informed, data-driven decisions.
  • Scalability: In different business processes, load peaks and troughs occur - at year-end or Black Friday, for example. Similarly, there are also periods that require less capacity. With a cloud-based architecture, you can take advantage of the built-in ability to dynamically scale up or down as needed.
  • Cost savings: The cloud-based architecture results in cost and resource savings - including reduced maintenance costs, so you no longer need to spend time and resources on further developing your siloed applications.

A cloud-based architecture makes it easier for you to keep up with technology and truly evolve your company into a data-driven organization. Consolidating your data into one in an organization-wide data warehouse creates a seamless end-to-end user experience and enables new insights that allow you to make more informed, data-driven decisions.
