5 signs that your network could be a security risk

Your company network is the heart of the digital workplace. All employees, systems and applications depend on it working and being secure. The problem is that many companies think they are protected, when the reality is quite different.

Here are five clear warning signs that your network could be a security risk and why it's important to act before it becomes a problem.

1. you don't know who has access to the network

Do you know exactly which devices are connected right now?
If the answer is no, it is a serious sign of lack of control. Unauthorized devices can be anything from an employee's personal phone to a hacker trying to break in.

Why it is dangerous:
Unattended networks are one of the most common ways for cybercriminals to gain a foothold in an organization. It only takes one vulnerable device for the entire network to be at risk.

Tip: Always have a clear policy on which devices are allowed to connect and use network monitoring to detect anomalous activity.

2. the firewall is not updated, or is missing completely

A firewall is the first line of defense against intrusion. But many businesses still use outdated hardware, or firewalls that are not properly configured.

Why it's dangerous:
Hackers are constantly developing new methods to get past older protections. An old firewall can give a false sense of security without actually stopping today's threats.

Tip: Make sure your firewall is continuously updated and consider a solution that is monitored around the clock.

3. Unusual network traffic that no one notices

Sudden spikes in data traffic or unexpected connections can be signs of a breach. However, many businesses lack the tools to detect these anomalies, leaving threats to go undetected for weeks or months.

Why it's dangerous:
Once inside, attackers often move slowly and methodically to gather information before striking. The longer they go unnoticed, the greater the damage.

Tip: Use tools that monitor and analyze network traffic in real time, preferably with a clear plan for handling incidents.

4. Old hardware that no longer receives security updates

Routers, switches and access points are often invisible in everyday life until they stop working. But even before that, they can be a risk, especially if the manufacturer has stopped providing security updates.

Why it's dangerous:
Without updates, hardware becomes an easy way in for hackers. Attacks against vulnerabilities in old network equipment have increased significantly in recent years.

Tip: Take stock of your network equipment and replace devices that are too old to be updated.

5. employees lack security training

A network is never more secure than the people who use it. Clicking on the wrong link, a weak password or connecting to an unprotected guest network can be enough to open the door to an attack.

Why it's dangerous:
Many breaches don't start with advanced technology, but with a simple mistake.

Tip: Invest in regular security training for all employees. It's one of the most cost-effective investments you can make in network security.

Don't wait until it's too late

A weak network is not just a risk of downtime. It can lead to data loss, financial losses and damaged trust with customers and partners. By identifying and addressing these five warning signs, you can reduce the risk of attacks and create a safer digital work environment.
